Linseed is the seed of a variety of the common flax plant. It is a good source of protein, as well as being high in minerals such as phosphorus, zinc, magnesium and calcium. Linseed is also a good source of Vitamin E, Beta-carotene and valuable plant lignin’s which act as an antioxidant.
Linseed contains soluble fibre, which has been shown to lower cholesterol. It is also rich in mucilage, which acts as a gentle laxative.
Linseed is the most concentrated plant source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which is necessary for the normal functioning of the body’s metabolic growth and renewal processes.
The nutritional benefits between golden and brown linseed are virtually the same. The biggest differences being the taste and colour – the golden variety has a slightly milder flavour while the brown has a more nuttier flavour.
